| Glaucoma
is among the leading causes of blindness in this country, and
can be treated when detected early. It is not a disease but rather
a circumstance where the optic nerve is damaged over time due
to build up of ocular pressure. The pressure develops because
of the inability of the eye to release aqueous humor, the clear
liquid that circulates within
the eye. When vision loss occurs it can be imperceptible, and
initially targets the peripheral vision range.
Simple tests
detect glaucoma, or the likelihood of glaucoma. The extent and
devastation associated with glaucoma cements the need to have
annual eye exams after the age of 40.
Those at greatest risk include the African-American community,
those with family history of glaucoma, those with diabetes, individuals
who are nearsighted or using topical steroid drops over the long
term, and people over 45 years of age whom have not had regular
eye care. |
